Based on traveller review data, we explore some of the cities that we anticipate will appeal to global travellers as they look to travel more consciously in the new year and beyond

More than half (55%) of global travellers plan to take slower modes of transport to reduce their environmental impact in 2022. This number increases to 58% for Italian travellers, 63% for American travellers, 72% for Chinese travellers, and 73% for Indian travellers.

In light of this data, Booking.com has delved into global traveller reviews* to reveal six of the world’s best cities for sustainable transport options in 2022. From guided cycling tours to well-mapped public transport systems, the cities offer eco-conscious guests plenty of options for getting around sustainably. Here, we reveal the cities that are set to be high on the agenda for responsible travellers – and how partners can further attract them.

Kyoto, Japan

A fascinating blend of ancient history and modern hustle and bustle, Kyoto is one of Booking.com’s most recommended destinations for sustainable travel by global travellers. With the city’s many sights relatively spread out, travellers will need to catch public transport in between. You can make this easier for guests by having this information readily available, including the location of transportation stops, the best routes and where they can buy a transit pass. Once at their destination, the best way to explore each area is on foot.

New York, USA

Rated Booking.com’s top-endorsed destination for walking, there’s little chance of travellers getting lost in New York. From wandering around Manhattan’s varied neighbourhoods to exploring the scenic landscape of Central Park, New York offers plenty for travellers to discover. To offer your guests a worry-free and sustainable way to experience the city, consider offering tours and activities organised by local guides and businesses.

Copenhagen, Denmark

One of the most sustainable and energy-efficient cities in the world, Copenhagen is a top destination for cycling, according to Booking.com’s endorsement data. One of the best ways to explore the Danish capital is by a guided bike tour where travellers can learn how to lower their carbon footprint while pedalling round both famous landmarks and lesser-known spots. As well as recommending local bike tours, consider offering rental bikes for guests who prefer to sightsee at their own pace. Make sure to indicate that you offer this amenity via the extranet to increase your sustainability accreditation score, which is especially important when you consider that three quarters (76%) of global travellers will choose a place to stay if it has good sustainability accreditation.

Taipei, Taiwan

Taipei is an easy city to navigate thanks to its well-mapped public transport system, so it’s not surprising that Booking.com travellers rate it as one of the top endorsed destinations for convenient public transport. It’s also the perfect destination for nature travellers, with eight national parks, magnificent mountains, offshore islands and relaxing hot spring resorts on offer. Including photos and detailed descriptions of nearby natural attractions in your property listing can help attract nature-driven travellers

Marrakech, Morocco

The enchanting and colourful city of Marrakech is full of buzzing energy for travellers to immerse themselves in. Often credited as one of the most sustainable countries in the world, Morocco’s efforts to prevent climate change through renewable energy and its ban on plastic bags highlight it as a genuine eco-conscious destination. This is reflected in our data, which shows that our customers recommend Morocco as a sustainable travel destination. Highlights worth sharing with your guests include Bahia and Badi Palaces, where they can explore the city’s fascinating history and learn more about the destination’s heritage and culture.

Prague, Czech Republic

One of Booking.com’s top endorsed destinations for city walks, Prague is a paradise for the urban adventurer. Point guests in the direction of the Bridge Tower in the Old Town, where they can stroll across the Charles Bridge with views of the Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral. For guests looking to capture the local sights, consider recommending an evening tour where they can learn about the history of the preserved medieval city while enjoying some of the city’s best spots for night photography.
