how can I request additional recent travel information from potential guests in regards to the corona virus? and possibly decline "suspect"booking regarding their itinerary without being penalized ?

For my first time, as a property owner, I canceled a reservation due to the coronavirus.  A couple traveling from Brazil were to have stayed in our Northern California, USA home's downstairs guestroom on March 14.

Our small town's March 21 street festival and parade have been canceled, because of the coronavirus fear.

The Booking, com telephone representative was very helpful and fully understood the situation.   I will not be charged a penalty fee, as the cancelation is not within 48 hours of the guests' arrival date.

Not knowing if the Brazilian guests speak English, I also sent my cancelation message to them in Portuguese.  I was able to use Google's English to Portuguese online translator.  I gave these traveling guests the names and telephone numbers of the nearby hotels, which are accepting new guests.

My wife and I were looking forward to meeting these South American guests, but we cannot risk the health chance.

Hi Terry

On this you need to be very careful and mindful not to make the wrong assumption.

Just because there might be an Italian flag next to their name on the booking does not actually mean they will originate there at all.

I know because I have had several where I thought they were coming from X when in face they where actually living in other countries nearby and coming over for a few days .

The Dublin, Ireland, St Paddys Day festival parades too have been cancelled.

Only in the last 24-48 hours we have seen a lot more decisions to curtail large gatherings, with a simple rule of thumb, no more than 100 ppl indoors and no more than 500 outdoors.

We can still accept people to stay we just have to be prepared and educate people to wash hands , wipe surfaces etc.

Of course the % most at risk are those with existing conditions and especially those with respiratory issues.

Kind Regards

Barry:  A host can tell the guest's originating country by looking at their telephone number on their Booking, com reservation page.

The telephone number's country and regional code can be found through a simple Google online search.

Yes however and here's the kicker that only mean that's where it sim card originated.

It does not mean they are actually based there.

I have had several guests who no longer reside where they were born. Also some can be away from home working in UK for example and then want to come to Dublin for an event or short stay.

With the advent of WhatsApp and similar, the need to swap simcards when abroad is not needed.

In AirBnb I have put up a request underneath my first photo : Covid - 19 : if in doubt don't book.

And went up with the price significantly . Since the cleaning will involve much more hard work and special products are to be purchased.

Then it is up to the people if they want to book.

I hope future guests read it.

Look after yourself everyone  up the lemons in your tea !

Greetings

I dont think it really matters the country of the guest....when guests travel they can be contaminated from anywhere...washing hands can help...but the virus can be spread with many ways and maybe we should all postpone our movings....

As Coronavirus rises....Greece closes restaurants, cafes, museums, shopping centers....

Wish everyone well.
