School holidays: how to prepare your property for families

Hi everyone!

As the February school holidays in Europe are fast approaching, many families with kids (young and old) will be travelling during this period.

Setting up policies and rates as well as highlighting child-friendly amenities and nearby attractions in your listing could help you appeal to families’ needs and increase your bookings. We’ve found that setting competitive child rates can lead to an increase in family bookings by up to 15% on average. 

In addition, research has shown that making clear the maximum occupancy of each room is helpful for families to understand the availability and limitations. For example, they will be able to see beforehand whether cots or roll-away beds are available at your property. In addition, families travelling in a post-pandemic world want to explore destinations closer to home so consider marketing your property as a place for domestic travel.

It's worth pointing out that setting child rates means discounting, which means earning less. School holidays are the most popular times and the easiest to get bookings for. Discounting for the most popular dates is not something that we do.

And there is not much point in setting child rates (discounting) for other dates as children in the UK are not allowed out of school. Therefore, setting child rate discounts for term times would mean spending time to do something that will (almost) never be used ..........

Thanks Megan  for reminding us of the school holidays…


My studio is very friendly to children…up to 18 they stay free…

I am a Genius member and that means I am already offering discounts…it’s very difficult for me to offer more discounts…but I offer things little guests like…such as candies, biscuits, chocolates, books, games, drawings…and of course my two incredible friendly dogs that kids get so excited that they come back again just to play with the dogs!!!

M Adamopoulou Thanks for your feedback! I agree that that all the little extras you provide your guests are very important to kids (and I'm sure the parents appreciate it too!).


Dear Megan, I am frustrated here. I am not receiving my payments and I have no idea how to follow up on it. I am a host or partner. please help. I also think the website could be a little user friendly. it is not fair that one spends two hours trying to figure out how to communicate with you even though I have logged in

Hi Maria...........Good ideas, as always POSITIVE...We Only supply Champagne Free and Guests always come back haha  Another good idea............The dogs MUST also Love the attention from Parents and Children as well.... YES !! Many times that "little" extra goes a long way and makes a Huge difference.........Well said.

Hi Megan  , Didem - Community Manager  

In Feb 15th I created a Get Away Deal…only for my standard rates.

The first days I created a green banner was seen on my listing…but my non refundable rates disappeared…

I messaged BDC…no reply but non refundable rates appeared again…after a couple of days…


Now banner has disappeared and both my standard and refundable rates have a deduction probably made by BDC…


Probably BDC will not reply to my message again…I would highly appreciate if you could help me on this…

If not I guess I will just have to deactivate my promotion…

BDC has replied to me that there has been a problem in Promotions….therefore my promotion will be valid starting 15.3.
