Question of the Week: All about wifi

Hi everyone,

One of the essential guest amenities nowadays is WiFi, so I thought it'd be nice for everyone to share how they handle it at their properties.

Within minutes of arriving, guests will ask for the wifi code and expect to get online. It’s so important to guests that some partners have even suggested placing the wifi code within the House Rules to ensure that guests see it.

Now let’s hear how you do it

Do you have a multiple access points? Collect emails for the login credentials? Limit the daily data usage?

And finally, tell us the name of your wifi router. Bonus points for creativity!

Hi Ilaria, in our case we offer free wifi on a Google Mesh network of 6 points to ensure there is enough coverage in all areas, there is a card in the room with a QrCode to automatically connect (and written SSID and password just in case) on the same card we also have QR codes and urls to our Social Media Sites and TripAdvisor asking the guest for some Social Love

Hi Samuel, that sounds like a good wifi coverage, thanks for sharing.

Does your wifi router have a specific name? It's interesting to know how many partners went creative rather than sticking to the property's name.

We have 2 routers per floor plus our own private network. Each has the hotel name and a number that indicates floor and first or second router.....i.e. hotelname...x/x .

Our private network has a name that would put you off wanting to try it...to hopefully deter hackers and only allows preset MAC numbers to join (the public system has been hacked twice!)

The reception area has the public router name and password clearly displayed, as does each room.

I want to cry guys!!!!

Our whole area has no telephone network, no internet connection....

We have to spend so much money in personal data....

Our location is in a country village near the beach so most of our guests understand our lack of internet...

Some guests have told us that sometimes its better without internet connection, especially for their children. After all thats what hollidays are for. To be away from everybody and everything.....

Thinking positive is the only solution to worries....

We share our wifi with guests but connection is poor...

Thats life....

My home is so old (almost 300 yrs old) and the walls so thick, one internet provider will not reach from one end of the house to the other so I have to have 2 separate internet providers.

The wifi code and pin number is clearly displayed in all rooms (for the provider at that end of the house).

Wifi is available 24/7 to all guests free of charge.

And yes, the first thing guests ask for is the wifi code....like their life depends on it lol

It's an interesting question and I'm certain we will be forced to provide unlimited (free) coverage in the near future.

For the time being, however, we provide guests with 1Gb free data at our vacation rental. We send the code and password along with their arrival instructions by email and give them the option to buy more data when it runs out. We also explain where they can find free Wifi hotspots nearby (at restaurants or shopping malls).

It never occurred to me to have a creative name for the router - I thought our name FestinaLenteOnrus (which means 'hasten slowly' in Latin) is interesting in itself, but now you've made me rethink it. :-)

Lindie May I ask you for how many nights do you provide 1 GB? Are your guests satisfied with that?
The reason I am asking is because I have very poor internet connection and this year I will share my personal data with guests through my hotspot. I am a little worried how they will react.

M Adamopoulou, morning to you!

We provide 1Gb per booking (usually 2 nights, but the same for longer periods). Looking at some of the other establishments in the same area, WiFi is not yet one of the standard requirements. I must be honest, I have not asked guests whether they are dissatisfied with it and I'm sure, if given the option, they would prefer unlimited high-speed fiber :-) but our occupancy rate is too low for that expense. This may change in the next year. When we travel ourselves, WiFi at the accommodation is a bonus, not a prerequisite as we expect to spend little time there. But I agree, we have to move with the times, and if the pressure builds, it becomes the new standard.

Thank you very much for your immediate answer. Wifi is very problematic in our area, especially wehen young people visit us. Most of them are understandable and dont make a fuss. Its I that I dont feel very comfortable....

Lindie, Wifi might be a standard but since technology has become part of our everyday routine we should also leave it behind us when in holidays.... I dont really like it when I see people having their mobile even when swimming...

We have a UniFi mesh network throughout the hotel on a separate "Guest Network". No password, just a tick box to say you agree to our T's & C's and then it redirects to a Mailchimp landing page where guests can optionally give us their email address.

I have wifi in both of my apartments. Internet is unlimited, I pay fixed price per month (most providers in my area are cheap, so it's not a big deal for me) .

In one apartment I also have cable TV (in one package with internet access)

I printed information list for guests, for every property i'm managing

There is: WiFi network name and password, addresses of nearest grocery stores, parkings,

telephones to order taxi/airport transfer, and some other useful local info.

Very lovely! Did you use sewing machine or all done by your hands?

I have unlimited Wi-Fi for all my properties. It's a Must nowadays. Between TV and WiFi guests choose Wi-Fi.

So, did you implement it? Airbnb guests even complain if they don't get Wi-Fi details in House rules :)

Don't be afraid to say honestly what you have to offer your guests. it's Greece, its rural and it's holiday!

If people would stay two weeks, and are at your place for business, yes.

In your case, it is totally acceptable. I wouldn't worry about it. You have nice jam, hahaha.

I do offer full free unlimited wifi with a password on arrival - only since half a year. Many complained since we had limited codes before and often ran out.

And I do have business people here too, so they need it.

We (nextdoor) also use wifi with our own password and it has been done for one price.

Praise to our installer! Lucky us. But we don't have jam ;)

Many thanks guys!!! Cushion is totally hand made although I have and a sewing machine which is actually my moms brought from Canada many years ago.... Thanks Aaltje-B- for encouraging me. To tell you the truth I think my guests also see it like that. They don’t care at all for TV and don’t make a fuss about WIFI.
This year in addition to home made marmalade I have also prepared home made olives from our olives!!!
It’s Greece...it’s rural... it’s holidays....

OLIVES! Oh yeah, I can munch my way through plenty of those. In Spain they are called aceitunas once steeped in brine/whatever and various flavours. I prefer the green ones.

fluff yes Greek olives are very tasty...

According to myth, Athena “Goddess of wisdom and justice” gave Greeks the olive tree and with it its many beneficial properties.

Greek olives are known for their first-class quality and taste, and Greece is famous for its unique varieties. I have both black and green olives. Every year before wintertime, not only me but most people prepare and preserve them in different ways but mostly in water and salt (brine)

I personally prefer black ones from Kalamata but stuffed green ones with almonds, carrots and red peppers are my best....Actually today my aunt brought me some fine green ones from Amfissa.

"M"..I love olives especially the Sicilian Green ones with lemon and garlic (yum) but my favorite are also Black Greek olives. !!......and CONGRATULATIONS for the very fine interview with Click..very professional and very interesting (well done)

We are still very busy in Queensland and have only 5 days vacant for April so hopefully in the next few days all will be full (good news)

Due to the fact we have quite a few business people as well we have unlimited Wi-Fi with a company called TPG and it cost Australian ($59,00) per month unlimited, so not too bad and we are in a Tourist area so it is DEFINITELY a Must to have wi.fi in the apartment. We also have Foxtel and Netflix installed in both TVs................take care and talk soon.Michael and Rita. x...The Click conference is only a short time away, we are really looking forward to it and also to see Rita's brothers and family in Belgium....cool as !!

Pibomarco.................I agree (sometimes it is easier to buy and install IKEA) but everyone and there friends has it and for me its a little BORING !!!......make your home or apartment DIFFERENT.

Tomorrow we are moving downstairs. Springtime is here and our new guests will be arriving. I am very anxious to meet them.
Click will certainly be a fantastic experience for you snd it’s so nice that you can visit Rita’s brothers and family.
Michael, my father was a carpenter and I love hand made furniture but nowadays they are so expensive most people cannot afford them, making IKEA a more economical solution.

"M" my father was also a carpenter and I understand about IKEA..its reliable/plain and cost effective. Thats the way of the World today..any thing different with furniture is damn expensive so Katerinka..Paintings certainly make a difference. (well said)

Rita and I have been so fortunate that all of our furniture for the apartment and house comes from All over the World and the company I worked for always shipped it to my new location so it is lovely and has a story behind all the pieces...............Michael.

Thank you for sharing picture with your dad, you both look great with smile and the wine glasses. Doctor said I need glasses :)

I also collected a lot of handmade furniture, handmade silk carpets and arts from all over the world. We in fact have very similar taste as I can see the same handcrafted carpets, antique furnitures and white leather sofa. Mine comes with chair and foot rest and has marble table to set aside the glass of wine :)

Paintings, lithographs, plates, wall decors, hand painted vases, decorations from Peru to Cebu as Enya was singing... Practically every piece in my house is a story teller and piece of art. My champagne glasses are handpainted by Arabian artist (when they don't really like to work) and I asked him to put words like "peace", "joy", "love" on each of them to have some entertainment with guests, so when someone gets the glass, he knows what to drink for.

My lipstick holder is painted by Indian artist. Vodka glasses on wooden tray, that if you turn them upside down they do not fall :) And even my toothpicks are pieces of art as they are handmade and have cute small shells on top...

Though they all blended well :) , I designed my own furniture and curtains. Dining room has Arabian style, for example. I thought I can do something that special for my guests, but I experienced a lot of "dreams didn't become true".

Carpets have no sense at all (climate is one of the reasons). Price does not meet the standard, no sense to place very expensive items into 2 stars property. Production time for made to order furniture and curtains is too long.

It's more practical to buy items at 0% for 6 months rather to pay full price in cash. Luxury bedsheets are too thick to dry fast and need more ironing. Same with towels. Guests were complaining and didn't appreciate at all goose down pillows and blankets. Too many decors are unnecessary dust collectors. Marble, white leather are hard to maintain and so on.

Also in Philippines you just give money to the caretakers and they buy everything needed, from bedsheets to furniture. No property owner will waste his time and many are abroad.

One day we shall meet and tell some fabulous stories about our furniture and life styles. When I worked in Saudi Arabia(for 14 years) I visited the Philippines many times to recruit staff and loved it there....................I have some Scroll Paintings from China which are 250 Years Old !!!!!..amazing and the Chinese cabinet in the Lounge is 105 years old !!!and yes carpet is only in the main bedroom as it is too hot in Queensland and the Dark wooden floors are super.................talk again..Michael.

We provide free WiFi to our guests. They'd either ask the Password within 1 hour of their arrival, or we just ask them if they need it. Some guests might have come to completely get isolated from their daily online routine so they just neglect the offer :)

Michael your white sofa is amazing. White is beautiful but not for small kids and doggies.
Michael your apartment must be incredible with so beautiful antiques and stunning artwork from all over the world. Dark wooden floors (parquet) are sparkling but who does the mopping????

"M"..we have a Professional Cleaning company who come in after the guests leave and re-do everything,,,its Fantastic !!..A vacuum cleaner and mops are also left in the apartment in case people want to clean it ( and sometimes they do..nice)..We don"t have dogs or small children in the apartment as its ONLY for a couple or business guests.......we had an 85 year old couple three weeks ago who were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary....it was so so nice , we left 2 bottles of Champagne and a large box of Chocolates.....they Loved it................cool as ...Michael.

Oh yes Michael!!! I forgot the champagne!!! I am using my IPhone so it’s very difficult for me to go back and forth and read all the comments writing in this petit box. You see we are totally isolated. No telephone network no internet network. To tell you the truth Michael, I thought that you and Rita lived in the apartment. I also leave brooms, mops and yes sometimes guests clean up. Not only me but also my cleaning lady highly appreciate it having not to clean up a mess.

Michael, I just noticed we have exactly the same small Buddha. I left him together with 2 other metal guys at one of the apartments. I hope the guests are not scared of them waking up in the middle of the night and seeing 3 shadows... Since they didn't mention them in their reviews ;)

M, I have increased acidity, so no onions and bell peppers for me. I, in fact, shouldn't eat tomatoes as well (and they are really a must in Greek salad), but....it doesn't stop me to enjoy Greece without leaving the country:

hahahahahah,,Ill come for a manicure xx and yes "M" the apartment is purely for investment..we have had 140 guests the last two years and we are almost full for April and May at this stage (great news)

We live in a 4 bedroom house in a little place called Clear Island Waters Queensland..will send some pics early next week, the house is more like a Museum than a house hahaha.

For our guests we provide unlimited internet access after they log on to our network using a simple ssid "motel rooms" with a simple password after clicking T & C they are on and using it we have 9 access points spread throughout the property with seamless handoff as they move about. The hardware is all UniFi network which also implements fair use to stop some people hogging all the bandwidth. The whole system can be manged by all staff via a simple webpage.

In today's travelling world WiFi and ease of access is a must ask you guests what they want and then implement the hardware is low cost and software is free.

I love this topic of wifi. Itis something universal, everyone get obsessed with wifi speed.

We know that guest loves free, free so our wifi is free, it has 23 mps, no too bad.

We provide the password and I read Samuel post, excellent idea to leave the code in the bedroom with the name of network.We change once in while the password because ournegihbor access to it.Only one router.Last year we did not have wif for 2 weeks due to a tecnical problem of our provider, immidiately guests started to cancel, they just want the service and we understand.

We leave the password on the router. That way they will not miss it. What if the note with password will just fall from the table or the guest will miss that door? :)

On Airbnb there is a proper field for wifi password, it opens automatically to the guest with confirmed reservation. Nowadays young people are so technology oriented, they love those fields.

I also include password in my welcome message to the guest. Everyone will benefit from it. Host will not be questioned for not providing password and the guest will feel safe during his trip, at least he knows he can connect to Internet if the door is closed and many do not use expensive roaming.
