February Photo Challenge: Embracing your location

Imagine that you’re a guest coming to your property for the first time. You might be from the other side of the world and maybe even a completely different culture. Traveling to a new country is exciting and you’re constantly taking stock of what’s different. As you enter the property, you are so attentive too what's unique about this place. And after you’ve come home from your trip, it’s these small details that’ll stand out in your mind to remind you of how special your stay was.

This month for our photo challenge, we’d love to see how your property reflects the culture or heritage of your location. Perhaps you've hung artwork from local artists. Or maybe it's not a thing, but rather an experience - like providing a cooking class with local ingredients.

Share your photos in the comments below.

Make sure to post your photo by February 28. Based on your votes, we'll post the winning photo on March 1.

  • Here at Vinboho Guest House, we love to do things differently!
  • Seeing as no one feels the same every morning when we wake up - we asked ourselves the question: "Why should your breakfast be the same every morning?"
  • We love to Excite! Inspire! and Set Trends!
  • What better way to do this, than to inspire your Guests for her rest of their day by giving them a "kick start" to an AMAZING day!

Gosh, Liza, what a fabulous array of mouth-watering delights to inspire a guest for the start of their day.

I am so in agreement with you that we need to inspire and that it's nice to mix things up on a daily basis. I always inform my guests when they present for breakfast, of various alternatives I'd be happy to create for them so find out what they fancy and then tantalise their tastebuds.

We inherited a huge amount of history in our nature. Our culture is based on hospitality and sports. I am proud to live in New Zealand and count it as my own. Fresh air, friendly people, pure life. Just great!

Finally succeeded! PFEW!

At Roaring Bay, almost distinct, only a few left.

Yellow-eyed Penguins.

The young chicks have been brought to Dunedin University research centre to feed them extra since they were underweight so we didn't see them. I have been told this penguin on this photo is one of the young ones from last year. not sure if it is a boy or girl.

When big enough and strong the young penguins will be put back, so hopefully next year I will see the whole group, who knows.

I have been up and down quite a few times from my home to Roaring Bay which is about 16.5 km, and battling with light lenses tripod and space, since it was getting really dark, and not allowed to used flash lights. very busy with people interested in taking photo's from all over the world. This one was iso 640. Just before dawn. I feel so proud!

Thank you Maria. We have to photograph from a hide which is on higher ground looking down on the beach about 50 meters away, with very small windows that can open wide to take photo's and to rest camera in the window sill and we can all stand in a row, that goes from high (for tall people) to low.

There was a double row of people, all juggling their camera's and trying to get the right settings, since it quickly got very dark.

The penguins are very shy and very quickly disturbed so there are signs saying we shouldn't climb on the rocks to get closer, we can't have access to the beach after certain times, no use of flashes, don't talk loud etc. So when people do that, there is a chance of one of them showing up after being in the deep ocean to catch their fish. They come ashore from 4 pm onwards to even after 9 pm. It was so lucky to be in time and allowed space by one person who gave way so I could have a peak. Thank you lady! Who knows this is the last picture I can make before it is winter here. But I will go again soon and try to get more pictures. They move after coming out of the water and clean up their feathers that look like wet velvet.
