China Union Pay cards

Hi, we are receiving card details from guests from China where at the time of booking we complete a telephone transaction to take an initial deposit. however, the cards provided appear to be issued by China Union Pay whereby a key entry is not allowed, the card is set up only to complete a transaction when the customer is present. Can I ask how others have got around this. We have advised Booking.com but they are not willing to stop accepting these cards.

Dear whoever you are,

We haven't had Union Pay card at our property yet, however, with MO/TO method, you can charge any type of card. Have you tried that?

Hi, although they come through as either a Visa or MasterCard, the card issuer i.e China Union pay, have not set up the facility to charge these cards as MO/TO. As we get quite a few guests visiting from the far east, we have been encountering his problem since last year but are getting nowhere with Booking.Com (surprise surprise). it is a hassle because we have to go through the invalid card process on the extranet which the guest simply updates with the same card. We are having to cancel these reservations as the guests do not have any other cards.

How does it come through like a Visa or Mastercard?

Do you use a Channel Manager or PMS? You get the details through an XML connection?

I cannot see a reason why it wouldn't transfer correctly to your system.

Now my other question is, can you process Union Pay with your POS? If that is possible, then try to Pre-authorize them.

That method can prove useful too.

I could test this for you with my system if I'd have a Union Pay card to do it with.

Best regards,

Hi Autumn29 - I had recently (in the last 5 weeks) updated my Policy to allow guests to provide Union Pay card details to make their reservation. To date, I haven't received any card details of this type so am not sure if the restriction of not being able to pre-authorise the card is placed by the card-holder or a blanket policy applied by Union Pay.

If it is the latter, and if it starts to become apparent that we cannot pre-authorise any Union Pay cards, then I will have to remove it because going through the invalid credit card process can be time-consuming and frustrating.

  • Hi, it is an actual blanket policy imposed by China union, none of their cards, whether they be a MasterCard or Visa allow pre-authorisation or telephone/mail order transactions. I have checked this with my merchant (worldpay) who confirmed this to me. (numerous times) China Union only allow payments to be made when the cardholder is present at the machine.

Even some POS machines do not accept Union Pay cards. We had to add another from a different bank to facilitate payment from the in-house credit card holders. Perhaps you can try it also.

Looks like PayPal made a deal with UnionPay, so you should be able to get the money via PayPal. The procedure would be:

1. get in touch with the client

2. ask to make a payment to your paypal account

3. collect the payment via wathever card he/she uses

Not perfect, still subject to claims and refund requests, but better than nothing.
