Commission on Cleaning Fees

Are you kidding me??? Just got an email from booking.com stating they will now be charging commission on my cleaning fee!!!

I ask you booking.com: "Are you here at my property cleaning up my home after dirty, disrespectful guests use it like a dump???? "

I'm pretty sure you can't actually take money for a service you are not performing. I will be taking this up with my government's Consumer Rights Regulator.

Booking.com ask for the greatest commission of all the booking engines, who also handle all the money, bonds and refunds etc, while they do none of that!!

I’m thoroughly disgusted.

I heard this might happen.  Disgraceful  We will have to put the charges up by 20%.

Though I have to say Janefryer, it leaves such a bad taste in my mouth that I may reconsider if booking.com.is the engine for me. I actually also think it's illegal!!!

I agree about the bad taste in the mouth.  But bdc is the only channel that got me bookings for my apartment this summer in France so I cannot afford to ship out.

Illegal?  I am not sure but apparently the reason is that Hotels are putting in a basic figure for rent, on which they pay commission but are then adding too many extras which do not attract commission. i.e. car parking, key holding, cleaning, breakfast etc etc.

For the little person like me (and probably you) who either pay for cleaners or spend more hours slaving that those we actually charge for, we are the losers.

Sigh!

Ohhhhh. France. How lovely! I'm in Australia and I rent out a few rooms in my home in order to help meet mortgage payments.

I do get the majority of my bookings from booking.com but I wonder would that change if I dropped them. I have friends who are only on Airbnb and they seem to get as many bookings as me, so maybe it's worth a try (scary - but it seems I am constantly disappointed in BDC).

And I do believe it's illegal to charge for a service they do not perform, so I will be contacting my country's ACCC - just to see if that's the case.

Lovely to chat with you (this is my first 'hub' experience). Take care.

Yeah, great to share!

I think Airbnb works on a ranking basis.  The more bookings/reviews you have received, the higher you are up the ranking  In Nice, where I am, there are literally tens of thousands of holiday apartments so if you are starting anew with them, like me, you are right down the bottom of the list never to be found.  In  England I use them for my country cottage and there is nobody in the area doing this, so I am the winner.

I too rent out my apartment to pay the yearly exhorbitant charges on the C'ôte d'azur and thus  live in a french camp site for the summer which is loads more fun anyway.

Keep us all up to date with your findings and good luck  with the bookings.

So we put up the fees by 15% then.  Not good for anyone except booking.com of course.   But if guests do not book because they dont want to pay higher charges then everyone loses out.

I truly believe that adding 15% will be met with anger by potential guests and yet if I don't increase it, I'm out of pocket. I pay my whole fee to the cleaner.

Hello guys!!!

Thanks for informing us.

BDC is the leader so we have to find ways to survive.

Unfortunately we have to raise our prices...

Certainly guests don’t want to pay more but neither do we want to pay more...

Take care my friend...

It’s wrong!!!! We just always seem to roll over with regard to bdc. They keep changing the goal posts and we keep accepting them. They are a booking service. They do not clean my property. They do not deserve a cut of that action. Just sayin’

I appreciate the feedback. CGC

Joining the group as I am disgusted as well and really fed up with the increases over the past few weeks!

High commission rates to start - then fees introduced when they take payment directly from customers - now commission on cleaning fees! Not to mention when you accept the Genius program and get a booking with a customer who gets 15% reduction. Calculate what's left at the end when you finish paying your overheads and then the tax man!

BDC IS KILLING US!

I'm seriously considering leaving and trying another way of renting - maybe setting up my own site and investing with Google to get good ranking!

I’m also with Airbnb and HomeAway. They do not have the traffic I get from bdc but I wonder is if that changed if I built up the reviews. It’s tough because it’s the ‘unknown’. I originally was only with Airbnb and was delighted by how many bookings I received, so I might just have to bite the bullet. Good luck to you.

I'm also on airbnb, worked great the first year then rapidly decreased 😏 however this year I have seen an improvement. It's hard to know what to do...

In France we have to pay tax AND social charges on any income.   Certainly wont be joining any Genius programme.

Perhaps I’ll adopt the attitude of ‘I may as well go broke sitting on my deck in the sunshine with a good book instead of working my arse off and inviting strangers to share my home only to give all the money to bdc’ lol.
