Invoices in red with a minus symbol next to it

I had an outstanding invoice that appeared as -$1.78 in red attached to a booking that was cancelled due to it being a double booking accident. I requested the guest was given a full refund. BUT A booking fee was still charged to me by BOOKINGS.COM of $21.78

but in black it looked like $20.00 had already been paid. and was not marked as outstanding

so After a few months I just paid the $1.78 manually BUT then the amount I owed in Red increased to -$21.78

In my book if it has a minus symbol infront it means Im owed this amount. so why wouldnt they just pay me the usual way and or why after I made a payment of $1.78 why did the amount I owe in red increase to -$21.98  This makes no sense to me.    Do I owe booking.com this fee or do they owe it to me. OR would it be resolved after my next booking through BK.com? Im confused.
