Do it as soon as you can, I found most bookers like to know that their booking is in place and that you have confirmed. This will cut cancellations down and No Shows.
We have an automatic (template) message to thank people for booking - it is sent immediately when they have booked. The message tells them that a few days before their arrival, we will send directions and check-in information. This works perfectly on all systems, except for some reason with Booking.com, guests don't check their inbox after booking ......

THEY DON'T CHECK THEIR INBOX BECAUSE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND IT ON BOOKING.COM'S TOTALLY UNUSABLE APP!!
It is the worst ! they also allow scammers continue booking through their app. They dont take reporting seriously at all.
