Basically, I received a guest review 10 out of 10 score by the guest, but for some reason the Booking.com score came in at a 9. Why?

Because. Just because.
Be happy that you got a 9. Many other hosts have received much lower. BDC allows this. It's what they designed their reviews system to do. BDC have no respect for hosts. Simple as that.
Because, just because ….. I put my heart and soul into making my cottage the best it can be, so why should I be happy with a system that’s unfair! When you give so much and gain a 10 for everything, who’d decided that the score should be lower, the overall rating should be a 10!
I think I speak on behalf of all hoteliers who use B.com, we all agree and feel for you Louise. We've all had it, and its just diabolical to get 10's on all categories but then to get a lower score on the overall which is the one that .matters is more than frustrating. We too have averaged 9.5 for a while now, only to drop recently to 9.4 for this very reason since b.com changed their scoring system. And choose what anyone says, it does matter. Guests are oblivious to this fact. I was fortunate once to actually ask a returning guest about this, it just came up in conversation. They'd previously scored 10 out of 10 on all the categories, but thought the overall was the resort itself, the weather, what they'd had for dinner in the town... Incredible isn't it? These are people we put our business reputation in the hands of.
So, you are not alone Louise, but unfortunately there is nothing we can do apart from not using the site.
We've had "the ice cream on the beach was too cold", "the rain was too loud" and many other gems. We're not alone. Many reviews start with "the only fault I could find" or "the only thing I was not happy about". They're not staying to play "hotel inspector" or "fault finder" - they're staying because they're on holiday. I have no idea why they think reviews are purely for minor complaints or reporting minor faults. But that's the way it is.
On the plus side, these issues affect all of us, so as irritating and annoying as it is, it's still pretty much a level playing field out there - just a lower level all round .....
....again, I blame b.com for leading the guest to leave any negatives. Why can't they just take that away and just let the guest say anything like that just in the main review like so many other review sites do...
I'm sure we've all had it where guests feel they have to fill it in, and put things in the negative box like ' nothing to dislike or like you've said nothing to do with the accommodation....
