How to set up policies, rooms, rates and facilities for children

Families are a large guest segment on our platform. On average, they stay longer and are more likely to book than other segments, such as solo travellers and couples. But families also have different needs and often spend time comparing properties before committing to a reservation.

There are three configuration components that determine how a property and room is listed for families and whether a child rate is displayed on Booking.com: policies, rooms and pricing. Setting up child rates lets families see all of the important details and prices for a particular room or unit on your property page.

Activate child rates

Setting up policies to allow children

You can choose whether your property accepts children above a certain age or doesn’t allow children at all. Here’s how to do it:

1. Log in to the extranet

2. Click on Property and then click on Policies

3. In the Children & extra beds section, click on Edit under Child policies and rates

4. Choose Yes or No to select whether you allow children under 18 years of age

5. If you want to, select a minimum age for children you allow at your property

6. Click on Save

Adjusting occupancy to include children

You can set the maximum number of children and adults that can stay in each room. You can also set the maximum total occupancy for each room.

For example, imagine your Double Room is set up to have a maximum of 2 adults, 2 children and a maximum occupancy of 2 guests. This means the room allows either 2 adults, or 1 adult with 1 child, but not 2 adults with 2 children.

Any occupancy you set is for guests staying in existing beds. Occupancy from guests staying in cots and extra beds should not be included.

Here’s how to adjust room occupancy:

  1. Log in to the extranet
  2. Click on Property and then click on Policies
  3. In the Children & extra beds section, click on Edit under Child policies and rates
  4. In the Occupancy section, click on the name of the room or unit you want to adjust the occupancy for
  5. In the Bed options and occupancy section, under Occupancy select the maximum number of adults and children who can stay in this room or unit
  6. Click on Continue

Tip: If you want to adjust occupancy for multiple rooms, you can edit occupancy for your entire property on the Child policies, occupancy and rates page on the extranet.

Activating child rates

You can create up to three different child rates for different age ranges - and the age range rates you set only apply to children staying in existing beds (not extra beds or cots). Alternatively, you can specify which age ranges can stay at your accommodation free of charge.

These rates only apply to rooms that you have set child occupancy for. If you have not done that, you will need to adjust occupancy to include children. You can also offer extra beds, cots or cribs in a separate section of the extranet.

Here’s how to set up a child rate:

  1. Log in to the extranet
  2. Click on Property and then click on Policies
  3. In the Children & extra beds section, click on Edit under Child policies and rates
  4. In the Child rates section, choose the minimum and maximum age for your child rate and select the price you want to charge
  5. If you wish, click on Add another rate
  6. Click on Save

Offering extra beds, cots or cribs

Extra beds, cots or cribs are handy, flexible sleeping options. Keep in mind that extra bed and crib occupancy and prices aren’t displayed or included in rates during the booking process.

Here’s how to offer extra beds, cots or cribs:

  1. Log in to the extranet
  2. Click on Property and then click on Policies
  3. In the Children & extra beds section, click on Edit under Extra bed & cot options
  4. In the Cot & extra bed allowance section, choose the maximum number of cots and extra beds you can provide for each room or unit
  5. If you wish, in the Cot policies and Extra bed policies sections, choose how much you want to charge for cots and extra beds for different age ranges
  6. Click on Save

Tip: You can see a preview of how your policies will appear at the bottom of the Extra bed & cot options page before you save.
