We are listed as no pets or service animals because we are not ADA(American Disability Act In the U.S.) we can't qualify to be ADA because of stairs(66) leading down to our waterfront rentals and do not allow animals on our property because of guests requesting non-animals rooms...to make a long story short we are now dealing with the DOJ (Dept of Justice) because we will not allow service animals..we are caught in a mess...ADA says under 5 units, we are in a historical preservation district and can't change structure of the 66 stairs...so has anyone else dealt with this..
We leave a little welcome note in the room with our personal cell phone numbers and tell our guests to call us anytime for any request they need addressed. Also we leave a questionnaire so they can add commits on anything they would think would make our property better. This also gives them a chance to vent any complaints directly to us and not do them in a review. As the old saying goes you can not fix what you do not know needs fixing.
We furnish several kinds of tea, coffee and spiced cider along with the creamer and sugar. We are a fully furnished vacation rental, full kitchens with all the appliances to cook a gourmet meal if they desire. In the 20 years we have never had anyone write a bad review because we do not do breakfast. We do make it very clear that we do not furnish meals. We also make sure the kitchen has all of the basic condiments, salt/pepper, cooking oils. spices etc. they might need. We also give a map of all the local eateries. We are in the Pacific Northwest, a small island of the coast of Washington state and people come here to experience the local specialties. Several local bakeries and our local farmers market on Saturday is always a big hit with the tourist.
We tried doing the "detox week-end" for several months and it did not work out so well with our property. We are a beautiful island oceanfront property and wanted out guests to enjoy the tranquility of just enjoying nature. We found that most people either have to or want to stay in touch 24/7. Since we are a vacation rental and not a Bed and Breakfast we did not try to just restrict to the dining hall. Like so many others it has been a challenge getting good WIFI throughout our property. We have been in business over 20 years so we have grown with the industry and see and understand what our guests really want when they come to our little part of the world. Staying connected to the "outside" world is one of the things that they demand.
